Instrumentals are one of the most important aspects when it comes to hip-hop. Producers and DJs have always been recognized as much as rappers, and icons such as J Dilla, Pete Rock, Madlib, and DJ Premier have maintained a cult status through their extensive works with various artists. We discuss the undervalued notion of sampling – such as its role in reintroducing older artists to a new generation (a.k.a. Kanye’s whole discography) - and how beatmaking should be held equivalent to playing instruments. J Dilla, Nujabes, and DJ Shadow – the three most celebrated instrumentalists – have crafted emotional soundscapes simply through their techniques and influenced many newer producers (look out for Ryan Hemsworth, Mike Finito, Eric Dingus, Clams Casino, etc). That alone, should validate their impact on the whole of music. P.S. Expect Kialha fangirling about Kendrick (To Pimp a Butterfly!!!!) and still trying to convince Nathan on old-school grooves.
